Why are Percy Jackson books so short?

Percy’s mythology focus on the children, and as they grow, young adults solving problems with only their piers. The first five Percy Jackson books are relatively short, however each book in the Heroes of Olympus series is at least 500 pages, so it has length as well. Just my thoughts.
