Does art play a role in society?
Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across space and time. Research has shown art affects the fundamental sense of self. Painting, sculpture, music, literature and the other arts are often considered to be the repository of a society’s collective memory.
What is the duty of art?
Art is essential to a culture’s identity, and to its sense of right and wrong. Art is essential to a culture’s sense of taste, its sense of what is good or bad, its sense of sensuality, beauty, spirituality. Art reflects a culture’s sense of self-worth. A culture’s humanity is connected to its artistic freedoms.
Artists, then, as socially responsible members of the human community, should strive – – have a moral duty – – to respect the moral rights of others and to avoid those artistic endeavors which exploit, oppress, and abuse human beings.
Why is art important to you and to our society?
Art forces humans to look beyond that which is necessary to survive and leads people to create for the sake of expression and meaning. Art can communicate information, shape our everyday lives, make a social statement and be enjoyed for aesthetic beauty.
Can art change the world?
Art does not show people what to do, yet engaging with a good work of art can connect you to your senses, body, and mind. It can make the world felt. And this felt feeling may spur thinking, engagement, and even action. As an artist I have travelled to many countries around the world over the past 20 years.
Is it an artist’s responsibility to confront moral issues?
Human beings have moral obligations, if they are to live in society. Artists are generally considered human beings, so yes, they have moral obligations.
Does the artist have an ethical obligation to the sensibilities of his audience?
Artists are not obligated to their audience. If a person creates something and decides that it is art, then it is art. An audience is unnecessary, and artists certainly have no obligation to an audience.
How does art have power?
Art has the power to move people and offer new experiences. Be it painting, drama, song, poem, novel, a spatio temporal experiment or any sculpture, art may motivate people to think about life positively or differently. It motivates people to attribute new meaning to life and existence.
