How do you play a trill on the piano?

I’m using as my example a trill between the 2nd and 3rd fingers in the RH, but this whole series of exercises can be applied to other combinations of fingers. Hold onto one finger of the trill and play the other finger (a repeated note) from the escapement, without lifting the key all the way back up to the top between the repetitions.

Can you feel the rhythm of the finger playing a trill?

It can be useful to feel the rhythm of the finger that plays on the beat in a measured trill when putting the hands together. In this example from Mozart’s C major Sonata, K. 545, I’m going to assume an upper note start to the trill and a demisemiquaver (32nd note) rate (although there are other ways to do it).

Should you lift your fingers high off the keys when playing?

You don’t want to lift your fingers high off the keys because then they have more distance to travel and you’re not going to be able to play them as fast. You also want the key to barely get to the top before you push it down again to play the next note in the trill.

How to do the trill correctly?

If you park your wrist in one spot and just try to do the trill with your fingers, you’re going to tense up, you’re not going to get it fast and even, but if you constantly have that rotation, you’ll stay relaxed and that’s how you keep it even and fast. For the second part of the form you want your fingers to be straighter than normal.
