Shiva lingas can be worshiped at home, but the general rule is, it should not be bigger than your thumb according to the scriptures. For worship at home, any idol should not be bigger than the thumb. The reason, I think is because we only offer a little naivedyam at home and so big murtis are not used.

Can we pour water on Shivling?

It is believed that Lord Shiva is the happiest around water. This is one of the reasons why a vessel is hung over the lingam in temples from which water keeps dripping out. You can offer your respect to Shiva by pouring water or milk over the lingam or Shivling, especially on Monday.

Can we make Shivling at home?

To perform the Abhishekam at home, you would need a Shiva Linga made of Pancha Dhatu or Ashta Dhatu or Brass. Respectfully place the Shiva Linga on a brass or copper plate on the altar in your house. You may also place the idol of Nandi in front of the Linga. Begin the abhishekam by offering water.

Never offer saffron or kumkum on the Shivalinga. Not only on Shivratri but also in general, never offer it. The reason is that Lord Shiva is a recluse, and recluse people put ash on their forehead. And it is a universal fact that Shiva puts ash, not Kumkum.

Can we pour coconut water on Shivling?
