Who is smarter mathematicians or physicists?

Who is smarter mathematicians or physicists?

From observation from academics in both departments I conclude that mathematicians are ‘smarter’ than physicists. Although the word smart is subjective. Maybe its the fact that mathematics is precise which makes the arguments made by mathematicans to be more solid or less hand waving.

How difficult is pure math?

Pure math is much more difficult. Classes in applied math consist of memorizing the steps to solve problems. However, classes in pure math involve proofs, which implies a good understanding of the subject matter is required.

Is it possible to study pure mathematics without knowing physics?

It is certainly possible to study all kinds of topics in pure mathematics without any knowledge of physics, because you will always find literature/researchers who are used to explain the key concepts to fellow mathematicians without any knowledge in physics. But here are some examples of useful interconnections, in arbitrary order:

What is the difference between mathematics and physics?

Physicists tend to think maths is their special tool for unlocking the secrets of the universe whereas mathematicians tend to think in terms of physics being a set of interesting applications of a more pure truth. Mathematics is especially important when we consider the impossibly small or huge.

What is the importance of mathematics in physics?

Basically, Mathematics is the language of Physics. Maths is important to physics but so is experiment. Maths frames theories which can make predictions, but it is experiment that’s needed to check the predictions and thus to verify or falsify the theories.

Can a mathematician work as a physicist?

Mathematics indeed, in general, mathematicians can work in physics easily, but I have not seen a physicist who worked in pure mathematics and contributed to it. Physics is the study of how this universe work, it can change sometimes though.
