It does not in any way reflect any of Amazon’s policies, work-culture or management. General: It’s an amazing place to be. Every software engineer around you is very talented, and carries a wealth of experience/talent. Your managers/colleagues are accessible and always willing to help.

What is the difference between Microsoft and Google’s jobs?

Microsoft needs software engineers for everything from Windows to gaming (although all those services are increasingly cloud-based), while Google wants technologists for everything from maintaining Gmail to building out its new Stadia gaming service.

Are Amazon engineers available 24/7?

Amazon engineers are supposed to be available 24*7 for some periods over the year. Other companies do have on-calls, but I don’t think as much as Amazon. People don’t stick around much.

Why are so many engineers at Amazon new to 2 years?

From my experience working for Amazon, they seem to grind engineers down, so they are regularly churning through a constant supply of graduates to keep employee numbers up. So a large chunk of engineering is new to 2 years.

Is a software engineer responsible for the code?

As a software engineer you are responsible for your code at the extent that if you are causing an outage (even a very small one) you might be excluded from promotions for a year and you have to explain it to a set of people how things went sideways and how you are going to prevent this situation in the future.
