What is a shield bash?
Shield bashing (or kicking) allows a player to stun an enemy out of a block and leave them vulnerable for a second.

To attack with a shield in your weapon-hand is an improvised weapon attack, doing d4 (plus your Strength modifier) damage. Reduce AC by +2 while your shield is being wielded as a weapon. Characters with the Tavern Brawler feat roll and add their proficiency bonus.

What is shield bashing and how is it used?
Historically Shield Bashing was used part of the whole package of skills learned when using a sword and shield. This included maneuvers what we could consider to be a type of grappling along with full body contact. What they amounted to in an abstract was to get the opponent prone or out of position so you had an tactical advantage
What does a shield bash do in D&D 5e?
In D&D 5e with its level of abstraction, the main use of a shield bash would be to knock the target prone thus granting advantage to the attack on a follow up attack. This doesn’t work really well for a low level character as generally they only have the ability to execute one attack action in a round.
Why do people use shields instead of weapons?
As shields are perceived as less suitable for straight attacking than traditional weapons, they do less damage but have a decent chance to cause effects like Knock Back or stunning. Using shields that way is a staple characteristic of shield-wielding type of Stone Wall.
