What causes a person to have a split personality? The only proven—and also the most common—cause for split personality is trauma. The trauma can come in any form but the development of split personality, better known as dissociative identity disorder, is a result of trying to escape or hide from a trauma.

According to this theory, alters are created when no existing parts can integrate new materials (e.g., memories, strong emotions, perceptions, attachment styles) because these materials are too threatening or are perceived as conflicting too strongly with what is already held.

It is important to note that personalities, once formed in early childhood, will never integrate into one person. Cooperation and co-consciousness can be achieved and maintained to help the system live a fulfilling life free of the chaos of duplicity, but they will never be like “everyone else”.

But ‘creating’ a sort of second personality would be possible, but only because the person that created the personality would believe so strongly that they had that other mind with theirs, resulting in them saying they have DID and things along those lines.

New personalities can be created well into adulthood. Yes but its not something i recommend trying it. For one you have to be put under traumatic stress when your young and you must have a understanding of thing that at a young age you normally wouldnt have.

It is just as impossible for someone living with DID to become a single entity as it is for a single adult entity to form a multiple system. I’ve heard about this concept called a “tulpa personality”, which basically is like a turbocharged, purposefully created imaginary friend for adults which can also assume physical body control.
