Unless you’re actively being attacked, release your choke hold after 10 seconds. 15 seconds is the maximum amount of time that you can apply pressure to the neck without risking permanent damage. If you’ve correctly applied pressure to the neck’s major arteries, your opponent should go limp after 5-9 seconds.

To put the choke on, you need to block the carotid arteries on both sides of the neck. So, to defend the chokehold, you need to create space on at least one side of the neck, so blood can reach your brain. You can do this by fighting your attackers arms, breaking the lock on their chokehold, or just loosening it enough to give you space.
