There is no single, correct approach that works for everyone. Not every therapist will work for everyone, either. Having a negative experience with a particular therapist or a certain type of treatment can make it hard to try therapy again, even if you want support.

How do you tell your therapist It isn’t working?

  2. “I’m not sure if I’m getting what I need from therapy.”
  3. “I’m not sure we click.”
  4. “I think I can handle things better now.”
  5. “I think I need to switch to a therapist that specializes in _________.”

Why do people go to therapy?

A lot of people go to therapy because they’ve been experiencing some type of stress or depression. They feel like something is wrong with them, so they look for something that the believe will work best for them.

Why doesn’t the first treatment work?

Whether it’s difficulty coping with stress or something more serious, such as post- traumatic stress disorder, the first treatment doesn’t always work. If you had heart disease, you wouldn’t throw up your hands and give up if your first medication didn’t yield results, so don’t do the same with therapy!

Do you make more progress with one therapist than another?

A person might make faster progress with one therapist over another, or might eventually outgrow their therapist, and be ready for a new kind of therapy to work on a different or more in depth set of goals after completing some earlier work.
