The truth is that in the job most doctors forget what they don’t use. In school the basic sciences are needed to understand physiology and pathology, and physiology and pathology will help you in the clinic. Sadly, in the end is mostly memorization, and memory fades away when you don’t use what you stored.

Do doctors know anatomy?

So in short all doctors do need a basic knowledge of anatomy but some specialities may need to have very detailed knowledge of specific organs. However none of the practising doctors have complete knowledge of all anatomical structures in details because that is the job of the anatomist.

Study exercise physiology online. Improve your health skill set with a scientific understanding of the effects of exercise on the body. No you won’t need to remember everything you learn. You will remember what you use and as you specialize the minutiae you memorized in your first two years you will recall where to look it up if needed.

Being a good doctor is not about knowing everything there is to know about medicine. It’s about learning the crucial stuff (you’ll know what’s crucial with experience) and internalizing it, AND most importantly recognizing your limits and seeking help (books, online references, expert consultation) when you’re faced with a problem you cannot solve.

How do you organize your drug lists?

Usually, I line them up at least 2-by-2 when a common stem appears or if they’re in the same drug class. For example, esomeprazole and omeprazole are both proton pump inhibitors, so they should be grouped and alphabetized with their stems highlighted, as I have done in these 2 lists.
