Anybody that is employed as a software developer by somebody else can be laid off. No matter how prestigious your resume or how bulletproof you feel in your domain, there are always business and/or policy considerations above your pay grade that could lead to the elimination of your job.

When a product is nearing the deadline, then the managers will pressure for more output. If you refuse to work late, then you can be sure it will show up in your next annual review. This kind of time commitment is a better fit for young engineers. I can’t work like that anymore.

Senior engineers will be targeted for layoffs at the first whiff of an economic downturn. They make too much money and don’t work as hard as young engineers. It is also difficult to find a job as a senior engineer. Lots of senior engineers will be laid off around the same time and everyone will be looking for a job.

After 10+ years as an engineer, the expectation changed drastically. The company expected the senior engineers to contribute a lot more. At the entry and midlevel, it was enough to excel at the technical side. However, the company wants their senior engineers to lead and work through others.

Is senior engineering the right fit for You?

Truth is – it’s easy to train young engineers to do the technical work. If you’re senior, the company expects you to do more. They want to get their money’s worth. This means more meetings, managing, networking, mentoring, and all sorts of crap that I was horrible at. That’s a big part of why engineering wasn’t the right fit for me anymore.
