Is it normal to be confused about my sexuality?

It’s normal to feel confused or curious about whether you’re straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual or queer. Lots of people also feel this way because others in their life may that think sexuality is a ‘choice’ or assume that being straight is ‘normal’.

How do you help someone who is confused about their sexuality?

Be clear and affirming with support and encouragement that is unconditional. Actively listen to a teen when they are expressing themselves and don’t shut them down with phrases such as, “Well, you know you like boys,” which can invalidate their sexual and/or romantic feelings.

Are teens supposed to question gender?

Hormones, cultural and peer pressures, and fear of being different can cause many teens to question themselves in many areas, including their sexual orientation and gender identity.

There’s no ‘magical way’ to know your ‘true’ sexuality. Some people have a fluid sexuality and may experience changes during their life. Some may experience traumatic experiences, thus changing the way they see their sexuality. In any case, your feelings are valid and being confused is okay.

Does it matter how you identify as gay or straight?

Doesn’t matter how you do or do not identify: Straight, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, transgender, genderqueer, agender, demisexual, omnisexual, polysexual, heteroflexible, sapiosexual, homoflexible, the list goes on and on. Even with all the labels out there, there are still many of us who feel as if we defy labels.

Some people have a fluid sexuality and may experience changes during their life. Some may experience traumatic experiences, thus changing the way they see their sexuality. In any case, your feelings are valid and being confused is okay. You can take your time to figure things out.

What is my sexual orientation?

Your sexual orientation is a reflection of your sexual and emotional feelings toward people of the same or opposite gender. Although some people know early on that they are homosexual, others go through a confusing period where they wonder: Am I different?

Should I talk about my sexuality with other people?

No matter what you’re experiencing in relation to your sexuality, there is no need to go through it alone. Questioning your sexuality is a perfectly healthy activity, and talking about it with other people can help you work through it more effectively. If you’re comfortable discussing the issue with a loved one, bring up the subject with them.

Is your LGBT friend secretly questioning their sexuality?

If you proudly identify as a member of the LGBT community, you may have a friend secretly tell you that they’re questioning their sexuality. While your natural response is to scream “ONE OF US” and deploy the rainbow confetti from overhead, I’d recommend taking a step back.
