Why two prisms kept together gives white light?

Why two prisms kept together gives white light?

This happens due to the difference in the velocities of different colours through the prism. i.e the refractive index of the glass is different for different colours. The second identical glass prism kept upside down recombines these rays into the white light.

How can we get the white light back when two prisms are placed in succession?

The reason for this recombination is that the second prism turned the colours towards its base through different anglessuch that before emerging out from it, thry were incident at the same point. Thus they rejoined to form a white light. In fact, both the prisms together act like rectangular glass slab.

How light passes through a prism?

As light passes through a prism, it is bent, or refracted, by the angles and plane faces of the prism and each wavelength of light is refracted by a slightly different amount. Violet has the highest frequency and is refracted the most. Red has the lowest frequency and is refracted the least.

What will happen if two prisms are placed?

If the two prisms are kept upright, one after the other, the white light will be split into a spectrum of 7 colours by the first prism. However, if one of the prisms is inverted wrt the other, the dispersion will be nullified and final light will be white.

What would happen if we place two prisms side by side and pass a ray of white light through them?

Answer: Two prisms placed next to each other such that their adjacent sides are parallel ,behave like a glass slab because a ray of white light falling on the first prism will disperse the light into its seven constituent colours. …

How would two identical prisms appear?

We can use two identical prisms, one placed inverted with respect to the other so that a narrow beam of white light incident on one prism emerges out of the second prism as white light.
