The science of color is sometimes called chromatics, colorimetry, or simply color science.

Is color theory a science?

Color theory is both the science and art of using color. It explains how humans perceive color; and the visual effects of how colors mix, match or contrast with each other. Color theory also involves the messages colors communicate; and the methods used to replicate color.

What is Newton’s theory of color?

In the 1660s, English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton began a series of experiments with sunlight and prisms. He demonstrated that clear white light was composed of seven visible colors. He identified the ROYGBIV colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet) that make up the visible spectrum.

How is color created by light?

Light is made up of wavelengths of light, and each wavelength is a particular colour. The colour we see is a result of which wavelengths are reflected back to our eyes. The visible spectrum showing the wavelengths of each of the component colours. The spectrum ranges from dark red at 700 nm to violet at 400 nm.

Does color doesn’t exist?

The first thing to remember is that colour does not actually exist… at least not in any literal sense. Apples and fire engines are not red, the sky and sea are not blue, and no person is objectively “black” or “white”. But colour is not light. Colour is wholly manufactured by your brain.

Why do we think differently about color?

The study further relates some of the things we already know – color context changes based on other colors in the field of vision and that emotion is a big factor when thinking about color. The study found that “globs” in the brains of monkeys reacted differently to colored stimuli, and reacted based on color.

What is color theory and why should you care?

Color theory also involves the messages colors communicate; and the methods used to replicate color. In color theory, colors are organized on a color wheel and grouped into 3 categories: primary colors, secondary colors and tertiary colors. More on that later. So why should you care about color theory as an entrepreneur?

Where did the concept of color come from?

It can be traced to works that are hundreds of years old. One of the most relevant today remains “Theory of Colours” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which was first published in 1810. While this was not a “scientific work” per se, it set the course for much of what we know about color and the basis for future research.

How did people come up with artificial colors?

So when humans wanted to generate artificial color (i.e., as opposed to what nature shows), they figured out that the way to do this was to look for pigments in the general colors of red, blue & yellow and then appropriately mix them up to get a full range of color, as this allowed for the best range.
