The reason could be we live in a physical world and realm. People interact and communicate socially and physically so most of the time we look at the outward appearance first of the person we are speaking to. The thing is we should know the person first before we judge him. We should make a right judgement not outwardly but inwardly.

Whether we like it or not, looks and appearance are things that are considered very important in our society.
