A reference is someone who your future employer will contact to verify your credentials. In case of freshers, references can be former teachers, the employer where they have completed their internship from or any organization where they were involved in some sort of voluntary work.

When interviewee is selected after a referral program, the chances of his/her joining is higher than other sources. Because people only refer other when they themselves have a positive outlook about the company.
