It is not any hard and fast rule that only IIT will help you crack UPSC exams. There are other reputed colleges also from where the students crack the exam. Studying in IIT would be beneficiary as it is one of the top institutes in India and will provide you a base in preparing.

The basic eligibility criteria required to appear for this exam is – candidate must possess Graduate Degree from a recognized University/Institute! So technically, 12th passed students can’t appear for this exam right after 12th. After completing 12th, they must complete Graduation first.

Can I become an IAS officer after 4-6 years of work?

I know a few people who got into IAS after 4-6 years of working in their other jobs as IPS, IRS etc. It is because, the type of recognition an IAS or IPS gets at such young age is unparallel in other services. They get the big bungalows, red-light cars and uniformed guards which are not available to other services.

Why are IITians so partial to become an IAS officer?

A prestigious job like an IAS officer drives them to go for it. One can say it’s their value system that makes them partial to become an IAS officer. I completely disagree with concept of ‘hunger of power’. IITians are not power hungry.

Why do parents push their children to become IAS officers?

The part ( as per my understanding) that parents want and literally push them to become IAS officers has no substance. Yes, prestige is an important factor. Most of the people who study at IITs are from a lower to higher middle income groups.

Do IAS officers become just a glorified Babu after promotion?

However, as you get promoted to DIG, IG or Commissioner/Secretary, your importance declines. There are several dozen IG, ADG and even DG sitting in the state capital, and no one knows them. The IAS officers also become just a glorified babu when they become secretaries after promotion.
