Can you be tracked by visiting a website?

Every user has a unique IP address that identifies them. By using IP addresses, websites can track what each user does on their site and what pages they visit. Your IP address can be used to determine your location and is the primary piece of data that will be used to track you.

Generally, yes. Your browser sends what is called a user-agent string – a string of characters which tells the web site a variety of things like what browser you’re using and what operating system your device is running.

What information can a website see about my computer?

Websites can determine your operating system, browser version, installed plug-ins and their versions, your operating system’s screen resolution, your installed fonts, your time zone, and other information. If you’ve disabled cookies entirely, that’s another piece of data that makes your browser unique.

What happens when we visit a website?

When you visit a website, the web browser that you are using (whether it is Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer etc.) will contact what’s called a DNS (Domain Name System) server that will translate the human readable website name into a numeric IP address.

If (and it’s a very big if) the site that now knows who you are shares that information with their advertising network, then the advertising network knows who you are if you visit any other site on which they provide ads.

Can a web server tell who did what from which computer?

If you have multiple users or multiple machines, they can’t necessarily tell who did what from which computer, but they can at least say, “This came from that customer’s connection.” The average person can’t get at this information, of course, and neither can web servers.

Can a website owner track your IP address?

A website owner can the visitor’s IP address, meaning he could use it to track your location. Plus, more info like what browser you are using and what operating system you are using. These many details can be traced. But of course, your info that you provide the website can be faked.

Who has access to my website?

Google, Facebook and your ISP, local and international governments may have access as well as hackers who have installed malicious scripts into your website (s). For the most part, as a website owner, you may see from whence they came to your website, the path / flow of their navigation and how and when they left.
