Is polyamory on the rise?

Though it’s still rare for people in polyamorous relationships to share legal parentage of their children, various forms of ‘ethical non-monogamy’ – relationships involving more than two adults who consent to the arrangement – have becoming increasingly widespread over the past decade.

Is monogamy even possible?

Monogamy in humans is beneficial because it increases the chances of raising offspring, but it is actually very rare in mammals – less than 10 per cent of mammal species are monogamous, compared with 90 per cent of bird species. Even in primates, where it is more common, only about a quarter of species are monogamous.

Is monogamy still possible?

If we mean realistic for the species of humans, then the answer clearly is yes. In various cultures around the world people are able to engage in lifelong monogamous relationships. Frequently those relationships are termed polyamorous, which means concurrent emotional relationships with more than one other person.

Is monogamy better than polyamory?

Monogamy and polyamory both have their perks and downsides. In the end, you have to be able to communicate with your partner (s) about how you feel and what you want. It is not uncommon for polyamorous couples to eventually return to monogamy after a number of years. People change, and so too does our concept of love.

Now there is a fairly new player in the relationship game, at least as far as the public are concerned. In the last two decades, sociologists, legal scholars and the public have shown great interest towards polyamory and it’s making them reassess the very nature of romance.
